Walking in step with the Holy Spirit

Jesus connects love for Him with obedience to His commands and promises that the Holy Spirit will teach His followers and remind them of His Word. The Spirit guides believers in truth and reveals sin, righteousness and judgment. Following the Holy Spirit is not a one-time decision but an ongoing commitment to obey God.

What it means to be Spirit-led

  1. Love yields obedience.
    • Love for Jesus is demonstrated through obedience to His commands.
    • Obedience flows from a relationship with Christ rather than mere obligation.
  2. The Holy Spirit teaches and reminds us of God’s Word.
    • Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would teach His followers and remind them of what He said.
    • The Spirit helps believers understand and apply God’s truth to their lives.
  3. The Holy Spirit makes everything better.
    • Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as a Helper who would remain with His followers.
    • The Spirit provides guidance, comfort and truth, helping believers live faithfully even when circumstances are difficult.
  4. Obeying the Holy Spirit is an ongoing action.
    • Following the Spirit requires continual attention to His guidance and a willingness to respond.
    • Obedience is a daily practice that shapes a believer’s decisions, character and relationship with God.

What the Holy Spirit exposes

Jesus explains that the Holy Spirit convicts the world concerning three essential realities:

  1. Sin.
    • The Spirit reveals sin and humanity’s need for forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
  2. Righteousness.
    • The Spirit reveals the truth about righteousness and points people toward God’s standard of what is right.
  3. Judgment.
    • The Spirit makes clear that judgment is real and that evil will ultimately be held accountable.
