First things first

Explains how peace flows from being right with God and how misordered relationships create pressure, conflict and instability in everyday life.

The order of peace

Peace is something everyone desires, yet it often feels out of reach. Scripture reveals that peace is not found by fixing circumstances or controlling people, but by being made right with God. When that relationship is in place, everything else begins to align properly.

Our relationship with the Lord is foundational to all our other relationships.

Truths that shape our relationships

  1. We all want peace.
    • We pursue peace through relationships, success and comfort.
    • True peace is rooted in reconciliation with God, not perfect circumstances.
  2. We all start the same.
    • Every person begins separated from God because of sin.
    • Our shared condition points to a shared need for grace.
  3. One relationship determines the rest.
    • Our relationship with God sets the foundation for every other relationship.
    • Right standing with God brings clarity, humility and stability into human relationships.
  4. The Gospel is the game changer.
    • Through Christ, we are justified and brought into peace with God.
    • This peace is not earned but received through faith.

Relational behaviors

  1. We look to other people.
    • We seek identity, validation and security from others.
  2. We expect too much from people.
    • Disappointment grows when others cannot meet those expectations.
  3. We struggle to forgive.
    • Unforgiveness creates distance and ongoing conflict.
  4. We either cling or withdraw.
    • Both responses reflect instability rooted in misplaced foundations.

Insight

  • Peace is not achieved externally but received through right standing with God.
  • Every person shares the same need for grace, removing pride and comparison.
  • When God is first, relationships are freed from carrying ultimate expectations.
  • The Gospel transforms both our standing with God and our posture toward others.
