Understanding the gift of frankincense
A costly and meaningful offering
Frankincense, drawn from the sap of desert trees, was harvested by cutting the bark so resin could bleed and harden into fragrant pearls. It was rare and valuable. In Scripture it was burned in temple worship as a sign of prayer rising to God and the presence of a High Priest who stood between God and His people.
Why the magi brought it to Jesus
The wise men saw more than a baby. They brought a gift suited for a priest. Frankincense pointed forward to Jesus as the one who would stand in the gap for humanity, offering His life, not incense, to bring us back to God.
Jesus as our great High Priest
His priesthood means access. He draws near to us so we can draw near to God. He understands our weakness because He entered our world, our pain, our limitations. He represents us before the Father and invites us to come boldly.
What this gift means for us
- We can have forgiveness.
- Jesus removes guilt and restores relationship.
- We can walk in purpose.
- Purpose is not performance but partnership with Him.
- We can have peace.
- He gives rest in chaos and calm in uncertainty.
We think peace means God changing our circumstances. God wants to give us peace in them.
